Ukrainian Judo Star's Legacy in the Shadow of War

When Stanislav Hulenkov enlisted in Ukraine's border guard in 2021, he aimed for a stable life while pursuing his judo career. Two years on, the 22-year-old disappeared on a conflict-ridden battlefield in eastern Ukraine, and his remains were identified 10 months later. Hulenkov is among many Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives in Russia's invasion.

Ahead of the Paris Summer Olympics, Ukraine mourns the loss of such talent. At least 488 athletes and trainers have died since early 2022, including around two dozen European or world champions, according to sports ministry spokesman Serhiy Bykov.

The conflict has disrupted lives profoundly. Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a notable weightlifter, was killed in May. Despite the turmoil, Ukraine is sending a smaller delegation to the Games while training amid war conditions. Russian and Belarusian athletes participate as neutrals, without national symbols. This heartbreaking loss of talent underscores the devastating impact of war on sports and young lives.
