Neeraj Chopra: Consistency and Triumph Amidst Challenges

Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra's ability to live in the moment and maintain remarkable consistency in his javelin throws sets him apart, according to AFI chief Adille Sumariwalla. Despite rumours of an injury, Chopra is in top form as he aims for a second gold at the Paris Olympics. Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra's ability to live in the moment and maintain remarkable consistency in his javelin throws distinguishes him from the world's best, said Athletics Federation of India chief Adille Sumariwalla.

Rumours suggested that the Olympic and world champion was battling an adductor niggle as he aims to defend his gold medal at the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, Sumariwalla, in constant touch with Chopra's coach, confirmed the athlete is in peak condition.

''Neeraj lives in the present, unlike others who dwell on the past or future. His consistency at 88-89 metres has repeatedly brought him victory,'' Sumariwalla noted at a promotional event on Thursday. Despite never crossing the 90m mark, Neeraj won the Tokyo Olympics gold with an 87.58m throw and achieved his best international throw of 89.94m in 2022. Sumariwalla stressed that throwing over 90m doesn't guarantee Olympic medals, citing past examples.

While confident in Chopra's fitness and readiness, Sumariwalla evaded questions about shot-putter Abha Khatua's absence from the Paris-bound team. Khatua left for Spala in Turkiye but was omitted from the Olympic list the next day without a clear reason.

Sumariwalla also highlighted Avinash Sable's potential as a medal contender in Paris and addressed the resistance faced from national coaches towards foreign experts, indicating internal politics within Indian athletics.
