Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav met with Delhi LG VK Saxena on Monday to raise concerns about the alleged illegal extension of Mayor Shelly Oberoi's term, which he said ended on March 31. Yadav urged the LG to hold immediate mayoral elections to ensure that a person from the SC category gets an opportunity to serve as mayor.

'The tenure of the respected Mayor has ended on 31st March, and we emphasized that it was illegally extended,' Yadav stated. 'Rahul Gandhi has been raising the voices of Dalits and backward castes strongly. Following this, we met with the LG to address how SC rights are being illegally snatched. We demanded that this illegal extension be canceled immediately and an SC member be given a chance to become mayor through elections.'

Yadav highlighted that the third year in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is reserved for members from the SC community. 'This issue isn't limited to Delhi but also affects the entire country and, particularly, the backward classes. We had a very positive meeting with clear outcomes: the MCD Mayor's term is fixed for one year, and the third year must be reserved for an SC member,' he said.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi, who has held the position since February 2023, is the first Mayor of the reunified MCD. Separately, Delhi LG VK Saxena inspected the ISBT at Kashmere Gate, reviewing passenger amenities, and ordered a complete makeover of the terminal to reduce bus turnaround times. Additionally, Saxena directed agencies to clear encroachments and improve sanitation along Rani Jhansi Road from Filmistan to Pusa Road intersection.
