Australian cyclist Chris Harper has withdrawn from the Tour de France before the 16th stage, his team Jayco Alula announced on Monday. Harper is showing COVID-19 symptoms and will follow medical advice to return home and recover for future goals.

Harper's withdrawal is the latest in a series of COVID-related exits at this year's three-week race, following similar decisions by Juan Ayuso, Tom Pidcock, and Maxim Van Gils.

In response to the rising cases, Tour de France organizers have reintroduced mandatory mask-wearing and other protective measures for anyone in contact with the riders and team staff.
