Lionel Messi was visibly emotional as an injury forced him to exit what is likely his final match for Argentina at a major tournament. Despite his departure, the team rallied to secure the Copa America title on Sunday.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, sustained an ankle injury in the 36th minute of the final against Colombia. He continued to play until the 66th minute before limping off the field in tears, attending to his swollen ankle on the bench with an ice pack.

With the match still at 0-0, Argentina stepped up their game after Messi's departure, and Lautaro Martinez scored in extra time to secure a 1-0 win, earning a record 16th Copa title for Argentina. Messi lifted the trophy alongside longtime teammates Angel di Maria and Nicholas Otamendi.

"Leo is the greatest player in history. He never wants to leave the pitch. He has a swollen ankle and still wants to keep playing," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. Teammate Rodrigo De Paul added, "I know Leo, he always wants to be there. His presence is invaluable to us."

Messi has hinted at retirement several times recently, mentioning that he and his fellow veterans are fighting their "last battles" at the Copa America. "It's sad to see him go but also joyous to witness him say goodbye as a champion," De Paul said.
