At least 16 people have perished and another 19 were injured as intense wildfires tore through South Korea's southern regions. The fires were exacerbated by dry conditions and powerful winds, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Residents of Andong city and various other southeastern locations were compelled to evacuate on Tuesday. Firefighters are engaged in a fierce battle against multiple blazes, which have consumed more than 43,000 acres of land and wreaked havoc on hundreds of structures, including a historic 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, over 5,500 individuals were displaced from their homes in Andong, Uiseong, Sancheong, and Ulsan, where the fires have been particularly destructive.
