UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a compelling call for rapid advances in climate protection systems, stressing the urgency of safeguarding vulnerable populations from escalating climate impacts like extreme heat and natural disasters. Addressing a high-level event on early warning systems, Guterres emphasized the crucial role these systems play amid growing climate challenges.
India, facing one of the harshest summers, has prioritized early warning technologies to mitigate natural disasters. The government's implementation of advanced warning systems through the India Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority signifies a critical step in addressing climate-induced disasters.
Guterres highlighted the UN's Early Warnings for All Initiative, aiming for comprehensive global coverage by 2027. However, he warned that nearly half of the world remains without adequate protection. He urged both public and private sectors to enhance financial investments and called for collaborative efforts to ensure universal access to these life-saving systems.
