Cannes Battles Devastating Floodwaters, Spark Concerns for Future Alerts
Raging floodwaters caused severe disruptions in Cannes, pushing cars through the streets. While no injuries were reported, the city's mayor is questioning the delayed government alerts. The weather agency warns of possible additional storms, raising concerns about preparedness. Similar deadly floods recently hit Central Europe.
Raging floodwaters swept through Cannes on Monday, pushing cars through the streets and leaving the French Riviera city, known for its film festival, on high alert. While there were no injuries reported from the deluge, the city's mayor is seeking explanations for the delayed government alerts during the storm.
The city's mayor David Lisnard told BFM TV that an official alert from the government was received an hour after the storm had already begun, which raised concerns about the efficacy of the alert system.
The French weather agency in a bulletin warned of another possible storm event later in the afternoon. Comparatively, at least 17 people died in similar flood conditions across Central Europe earlier this month, marking the worst flooding in two decades in that region.
