The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL) launched its groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, known as Bhoomi Poojan, to commence the highly-anticipated redevelopment of Asia's largest slum, Dharavi. The event took place at the RPF grounds in Matunga.

This ceremony marked the beginning of major construction activities aimed at relocating Railway staff quarters and offices, as stipulated in the project's tender documents. The ongoing state government-led survey is crucial for identifying eligible residents, accelerating the redevelopment process, and ensuring inclusive growth.

Jointly spearheaded by the state government and the Adani Group, DRPPL is aligned with Maharashtra's mission to make Mumbai slum-free by 2030. The 600-acre Dharavi is being meticulously mapped for a phased seven-year transformation. Residents deemed eligible will receive 350-square-foot modern homes, while the ineligible will be rehoused elsewhere in Mumbai under different housing schemes.

According to DRPPL sources, the current activities adhere strictly to tender conditions, symbolising the group's commitment to revitalise one of the world's most densely populated areas. The project promises residents a seamless transition to new homes without temporary relocations. Modern amenities like roads, hospitals, and schools are integral to the redevelopment.

Non-eligible residents from January 1, 2000, to January 1, 2011, will receive homes on an ownership basis at affordable prices, while those post-2011 will benefit from the state's affordable rental policy. These residents will be housed in new, ultra-modern townships within Mumbai.

Efforts are also underway to rehabilitate all non-polluting industries and businesses within Dharavi itself, ensuring community livelihoods are preserved. Enhanced infrastructure will not only provide better living conditions but also support business growth through measures like SGST reimbursement and skill development centres.
