Floods in northern Nigeria have wrought havoc on Borno's Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, resulting in the death of more than 80% of its animals. The zoo, home to a diverse range of wildlife including lions, crocodiles, buffaloes, and ostriches, reported the disaster on Tuesday.

"Some deadly animals have been washed away into our communities, like crocodiles and snakes," stated the zoo, cautioning residents to take necessary precautions. The floods initiated when heavy rains caused a dam to overflow, displacing thousands.

The calamity has also impacted key facilities in Maiduguri, such as the post office and a teaching hospital. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu extended condolences and called for people to evacuate the hardest-hit areas, promising humanitarian aid would be provided.
