The government has rolled out the Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research (PAIR) programme aimed at enhancing research capabilities in higher education institutions (HEIs) by connecting them with top-tier research entities. This initiative was greenlit during the inaugural Governing Board meeting of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), according to Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology.

During a press conference, Karandikar revealed that less than 1 per cent of India's 40,000 HEIs are engaged in research activities. The PAIR programme seeks to remedy this by establishing a 'Hub and Spoke' model to develop a mentor-mentee partnership between institutions.

Additionally, the ANRF is set to initiate the Mission for Advancement in High-impact Areas (MAHA) to address critical scientific challenges, including electric vehicle mobility and advanced materials. The ANRF also aims to foster innovation through initiatives like the ANRF Translational Research and Innovation (ATRI) and create global research hubs through Centres of Excellence.
