The Centre is formulating a policy framework aimed at the decarbonisation of India's steel sector, a top official revealed on Tuesday. Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik announced the initiative at a recent event, outlining a multi-faceted strategy that includes carbon minimisation, avoidance, and utilisation.

The Ministry of Steel has established 14 high-powered task forces, comprising members from industry, academia, think tanks, and various government departments, to develop comprehensive recommendations for greening the sector. The collective insights have been consolidated into a significant report titled 'Greening the Steel Sector in India-Roadmap and Action Plan.'

The report delves into critical issues such as technological innovations, policy reforms, and financial mechanisms necessary for a sustainable transition. It also addresses challenges like climate commitments, rising energy costs, and stringent environmental regulations. With India's steel sector responsible for 12% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, this report is a crucial step toward ensuring global competitiveness and sustainability.
