Himachal Pradesh authorities have pinpointed 26 hotspots where drowning incidents are prevalent, aimed at reducing the alarming rate of over 500 deaths per year. To combat this crisis, the state disaster response force, police, and home guards will receive specialized training.
State Director General of Police Atul Verma announced that Home Guards will play a crucial role, being responsible for surveillance, prevention, and emergency response. These personnel will be equipped with life-saving gear such as life jackets, rescue ropes, throw bags, binoculars, and megaphones.
Research from 2006 to 2010 showed that drowning claimed around 514 lives annually, with most fatalities being accidental. The summer and monsoon seasons witness the highest number of drowning deaths, especially in Kangra and Mandi districts. Efforts are underway to create a standard operating procedure for effective emergency response by trained divers and SDRF members.
