A home guard lost his life to a tiger attack in Assam's Orang National Park, revealed a forest official on Thursday.
The tragic event occurred in the Bilpara range, where two home guards were on foot patrol when a tiger suddenly pounced, dragging one guard into the dense forest, stated Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Pradipta Barua.
The second guard quickly reported the incident, prompting an immediate search operation. Despite the officials firing warning shots, the tiger had already attacked the guard, identified as Dhanmoni Deka. The tiger retreated after hearing the gunshots. The guard's body was recovered and sent for postmortem.
Barua expressed concerns over the tiger now having a taste for human blood. Efforts are underway to identify the animal using its pugmarks and camera traps to ensure future patrol safety.
The Orang National Park, encompassing Darrang and Sonitpur districts, is home to 26 tigers based on the latest 2022 census.
