The Odisha forest department is under scrutiny as over 40 elephant deaths have occurred this fiscal year. In response, the department has reassigned its protection squads from forest divisions to circle levels for more effective wildlife protection.

In a recent letter to all Regional Chief Conservators of Forests (RCCFs), the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Chief Wildlife Warden emphasized the need for better leadership and standard operating procedures. Despite 397 squads being deployed, the department noted that their performance has been inadequate and unreported.

To address these issues, the department has decided to reallocate squads for improved field deployment and has instructed RCCFs to ensure effective wildlife protection by mobilizing squads from neighboring divisions as needed. Performing squad members from outsourced agencies will not be disengaged if they meet field requirements.
