The Gujarat forest department has initiated a pilot project in the Gir sanctuary area, employing an advanced sensor-based speed monitoring system equipped with thermal and optical cameras to prevent vehicle-animal collisions, an official announced on Saturday.

Asiatic lions, primarily found in the Gir sanctuary and surrounding areas across nine districts of the Saurashtra region, number 674 as per the June 2020 census. Gujarat uniquely hosts these magnificent creatures.

The project, known as the 'Gir Speed Monitoring System,' includes Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and animal detection through advanced imaging technology. Deployed over a 1000-meter state highway stretch between Mendarda and Sasan Gir, the system incorporates cameras, speed radars, strobe lights, display units, and a control center. It uses radar/LiDAR sensors to detect vehicle speeds, with ANPR cameras identifying vehicles for law enforcement. Alerts for drivers about their speed and real-time wildlife presence are displayed on LED screens, aiming to reduce accidents. The Gir Hi-Tech Monitoring Unit oversees the system centrally, ensuring both commuter and wildlife safety. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel praised this effort, urging caution among tourists and locals.
