A breach in the embankment by the Ganga river in Bihar's Bhagalpur district led to severe flooding on Tuesday, displacing several villages, officials confirmed.

Around 2000 affected villagers were relocated to safer areas.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) stated, 'The Ganga exerted pressure on structures along its bank in Bhagalpur district. As the water level began receding from August 19, the river's current intensified, damaging around 60 metres of the Ismailpur-Bindtoli embankment.' The flood impacted Karari Teentanga, Budhchak, and nearby regions of the Gopalpur division.

Bihar Water Resources Department Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary announced that materials have been transported for immediate embankment repair, and two senior WRD teams have been dispatched for urgent repair and rescue measures. The district authorities have mobilized the State Disaster Rescue Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to respond.

Officials noted that continuous rainfall in the state and Nepal's catchment areas have caused elevated river levels, leading to flood-like situations in several regions, particularly the Kosi-Seemanchal area.
