Storm Debby's Final Assault: Tornadoes, Floods, and Destruction
The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Debby continued to wreak havoc across the eastern United States, with heavy rains, flash flooding, and tornadoes threatening the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Already drenched areas in North and South Carolina prepared for additional flooding, while widespread damage was reported across multiple states.
The remnants of Debby surged northward Friday, lashing the Carolinas with torrential rains, flash floods, and tornado warnings. This tumultuous weather pattern is expected to batter the Mid-Atlantic states and parts of New York and New England.
Accuweather's chief meteorologist, Jon Porter, warned that rainfall could turn perilous by the weekend, potentially causing dangerous flooding near major cities along Interstate 95. A swath of eastern Virginia to Vermont is bracing for possible tornado outbreaks.
The perilous journey of Debby has already proven fatal, claiming eight lives, including a 78-year-old woman in Browns Summit, North Carolina. The devastation includes crumbled homes, damaged infrastructure, and swift water rescue missions. South Carolina's Moncks Corner experienced severe flooding, with reports of swift water rescue teams responding to the chaos.
