Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri C.R. Paatil, today released a pivotal publication by the Central Water Commission (CWC) titled ‘Assessment of Area Affected due to Floods in India’. The launch event took place in New Delhi.

The publication presents a comprehensive study by the CWC, leveraging satellite imagery to assess flood events from 1986 to 2022. The study reveals that approximately 20.5 million hectares (Mha) of land in India have been protected from floods through various structural measures. However, it also highlights that around 21 Mha of land has been affected by floods during the same period.

Key Insights from the Publication:

Flood Protection: The study underscores the effectiveness of structural measures in flood protection, covering over 20.5 Mha of land.

Flood-Affected Areas: The analysis identifies approximately 21 Mha of land affected by floods, offering detailed district-wise data.

Applications: The publication is designed to aid in the development of early warning systems, flood management strategies, emergency response measures, and infrastructure planning to prevent flood-related damages.
