A storm that brought heavy rainfall to eastern Afghanistan killed at least 35 people on Monday, according to a Taliban official.
In Nangarhar province, many others sustained injuries, as confirmed by Sediqullah Quraishi, provincial director of the information and culture department. Five members of the same family died when the roof of their house collapsed in Surkh Rod district, while four other family members were injured.
The fatalities include women and children, and the harsh weather has led to significant damage to properties and crops throughout the province.
Earlier, the World Food Programme reported that similar heavy rains had killed over 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes in the northern province of Baghlan on May 10 and May 11. Survivors have been left without homes, land, or sources of livelihood.
