Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday confirmed the involvement of the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard in ongoing efforts to rescue an excavator operator trapped at a water project in Palghar. The operator has been stuck for 17 days following a cave-in.

The incident took place on the night of May 29 when soil and wall structures collapsed during tunnel shaft work at the Surya water supply project in Sasun Navghar village, approximately 50 km from Mumbai. Despite extensive efforts, the operator and the equipment remain unspotted.

Chief Minister Shinde, accompanied by MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee and Palghar Collector Govind Bodke, visited the location for an on-site review. Speaking to reporters, Shinde revealed that the Indian Army, Navy, and Coast Guard have now joined the efforts to locate and rescue the operator, identified as Rakesh Yadav. He also announced a compensation package of Rs 50 lakh for Yadav's family and a job offer for a family member in case of his death. Additionally, professors from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) have been tasked with overseeing the rescue operation and investigating the cause of the incident to prevent future occurrences.
