PSU shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd signed a notable agreement with Bangladesh's defence ministry to construct an ocean-going tug, per official announcements made on Monday.

The pact, valued at approximately USD 21 million, was formalized in the presence of Commodore Shantanu Bose (retd), Director (shipbuilding) of GRSE, and Commodore A K M Maruf Hassan, Director of Purchase (Navy) at the Directorate General Defence Purchase of Bangladesh's Ministry of Defence.

Scheduled for delivery within 24 months, the vessel will measure nearly 61 meters in length and 15.80 meters in width, achieving a maximum speed of 13 knots when fully loaded. Its primary roles encompass towing ships at sea, assisting in berthing and casting off, and enabling turning movements through pushing and pulling. The tug will also be equipped for rescue and salvage operations.

This latest contract follows closely on the heels of GRSE's recent agreement with a German shipping company for four multipurpose cargo vessels and a USD 16.6 million contract with the Bangladesh Inland Waterways Transport Authority (BIWTA) to build a trailing suction hopper dredger. Additionally, GRSE is crafting six patrol boats for Bangladesh's Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries project.
