On Wednesday, Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh took significant parliamentary action by filing a privilege notice against Home Minister Amit Shah. The motion, presented to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, addresses alleged derogatory remarks Shah made about Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi during a bill discussion.
Ramesh's notice claims that during a debate on the Disaster Management Bill, 2024, Shah implied that during Congress rule, control was centralized within a single family, suggesting the Congress president's involvement in government funds. Although Shah did not directly name Gandhi, Ramesh asserts the implication was clear and damaging.
The Congress leader labeled Shah's statement as false and defamatory, arguing it breaches the privilege of Gandhi and contemns the House. Ramesh has called for privilege proceedings against Shah, seeking accountability for what he describes as a premeditated attempt to tarnish Gandhi's reputation.
