In a landmark decision, the Kerala Legislative Assembly passed the Private Universities Bill on Tuesday, opening doors for private institutions to establish campuses within the state. The decision, however, was not without its contentious debates. The Bill underwent a rigorous examination by the Subject Committee before receiving approval, amid resistance from various opposition parties.

State Higher Education Minister R Bindu championed the legislation, hailing it as a progressive move to enhance Kerala's educational landscape. She emphasized that stringent regulations would govern these private universities to ensure academic standards remain robust. Yet, the opposition raised significant issues, particularly concerning the financial and admission guidelines of these future institutions.

Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan stressed the need for a thorough analysis of the Bill's impact on existing public educational establishments. He urged the government to allow corporate education bodies, pivotal in the region, to participate, while simultaneously safeguarding public university interests. Concurrently, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala cautioned about student migration, questioning if new private universities could address this pressing issue. The Bill awaits the Governor's assent to become law.
