Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is losing its foothold in the northeastern state, attributing this to the party's failure to deliver on promises made before the 2018 Assembly elections.
The BJP, which previously held no seats in the 60-member Tripura Assembly, achieved a surprising victory in 2018 by winning 36 seats and obtaining 51% of the vote share. However, Sarkar pointed out a decline in their performance during the 2023 elections, where they received only 39% of the votes.
In a CPI(M) rally in Gomati district's Udaipur, Sarkar claimed that the state's socio-economic conditions deteriorated under BJP rule. He called for urgent action to mobilize against the BJP-led government. On the other hand, BJP general secretary Amit Rakshit emphasized the party's consolidation in the political landscape with successes in Lok Sabha and panchayat elections, and a growing membership base.
