In a surprising development, Sue Gray, the former chief of staff to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has decided not to take up the position of envoy to Britain's regions and nations. This marks the conclusion of an influential career for one of Downing Street's most notable insiders.
Gray gained prominence for authoring a report on parties held in ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Downing Street offices during the COVID-19 lockdowns. She was subsequently appointed to Starmer's team while he was in opposition, with a mission to guide the Labour Party into government.
Gray, who left her role in October amid what she described as "intense commentary," citing concerns over becoming a "distraction," has now chosen to end her government service. Her resignation from the civil service to join Starmer's team had previously raised eyebrows within the Conservative Party.
