The Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja has vehemently criticized the proposal for 'One Nation One Election' (ONOE), asserting it poses a fundamental threat to India's multi-party democratic and federal system. Raja described the initiative as part of PM Narendra Modi's agenda, indicating strong public opposition to the idea.
Raja warned that implementing ONOE could lead to autocratic rule by undermining the states' autonomy and the parliamentary democratic foundations of the Indian constitution. He was supported by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who stated that achieving consensus for this policy in parliament is almost impossible.
Despite these criticisms, PM Modi reiterated his government's focus on implementing ONOE, stating that it could strengthen India's democracy and optimize resources. Modi also emphasized progress towards a 'One Nation One Civil Code', underscoring a vision for a secular, developed India.
