Buffer zones are set to be enforced around clinics and hospitals providing abortions in England and Wales starting Thursday. The new law criminalizes intentional or reckless attempts to influence a person's decision regarding abortion, as well as obstructing access to these services.
The UK's Home Office has announced that these 'safe access zones' will stretch to a radius of 150 meters, aiming to offer better protection for women from harassment and distress. Offenses could include distributing anti-abortion leaflets, protesting, or even silent prayers.
Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips stated, "The idea that any woman is made to feel unsafe or harassed for accessing health services, including abortion clinics, is sickening. This stops today." The law, backed by women's rights groups, received parliamentary approval last year.
