Shocking Election Scandal: $39M Bribery Scheme Unveiled in Moldova
Moldovan police allege that businessman Ilan Shor funneled $39 million to influence voters in a presidential election and EU accession referendum. Pro-European candidate Maia Sandu faces a runoff against Alexandr Stoianoglo after a narrow referendum win. Shor, accused of bribing 130,000 voters, denies wrongdoing.
In a dramatic development, Moldovan police have accused fugitive businessman Ilan Shor of channeling $39 million to influence last Sunday's presidential election and a crucial referendum on European Union accession. Authorities claim Shor, reputed for his pro-Russian stance, sought to undermine the pro-Europe campaign.
The police's allegations center on an attempt by Shor to bribe 130,000 voters, charges he fervently denies. Moldova's police chief, Viorel Cernauteanu, revealed that $24 million was funneled in October, following a $15 million transfer in September, processed through Russia's Promsvyazbank to sway votes.
The contentious election resulted in a slim majority supporting EU accession. Pro-European incumbent Maia Sandu is set for a runoff against Alexandr Stoianoglo, backed by pro-Russian interests, after failing to secure an outright victory. Meanwhile, Russian officials have dismissed the election's fairness, alleging Western interference.
