Sitaram Yechury, an affable leader with cross-party political connections, was among the most prominent Left leaders in India. Known for his sharp parliamentary interventions and pragmatic alliances, Yechury continued to wield influence despite his party's waning fortunes.
Joining the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975, Yechury quickly rose through the ranks. He was a brilliant student, bagging first-class degrees in economics from Delhi University's St. Stephen's College and Jawaharlal Nehru University. His journey began in 1974 as part of the Students' Federation of India and eventually led to his election as CPI(M) general secretary in 2015.
Yechury was a two-term Rajya Sabha member, celebrated for his impactful speeches and awarded Best Parliamentarian in 2017. Tributes from leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi underscore his commitment to India's diversity and constitutional values. Yechury's untimely death is described as a significant loss for the Left and democratic forces in Indian politics.
