Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has expressed profound sorrow over the death of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, who passed away at the age of 72 following a prolonged illness. Gandhi highlighted their close collaboration from 2004-08 and the enduring friendship they shared.
Gandhi praised Yechury's unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in India's Constitution and his staunch defense of the country's diversity and secularism. She described him as a lifelong communist whose dedication was firmly rooted in democratic principles, highlighting his significant impact during his twelve-year tenure in Parliament.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also condoled Yechury's death, lauding his lifetime of service to the people and his contributions to the nation. Kharge emphasized that Yechury's leadership will remain a source of inspiration, offering condolences to his family during this time of bereavement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief, calling Yechury a "leading light of the Left," and extended his thoughts to the veteran leader's family and admirers.
The CPI(M) General Secretary passed away on Thursday afternoon at AIIMS in Delhi after battling pneumonia.
