Aparna Yadav, sister-in-law of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and a BJP leader, is set to join the Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Women as its vice-chairperson, sources close to her confirmed on Tuesday.

An official notification issued by Principal Secretary Leena Johri last week appointed Babita Chauhan as chairperson, and Aparna Yadav along with Charu Chaudhary as vice chairpersons, for a period of one year or until further notice by the state government. This comes after Aparna, who had met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday evening, quelled rumours about rejoining the SP.

Aparna Yadav is the younger daughter-in-law of SP founder and former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, and wife of Prateek Yadav, the step-brother of Akhilesh Yadav. A diploma holder in international relations, Aparna had unsuccessfully contested the 2017 UP assembly polls from Lucknow Cantt on an SP ticket but lost to BJP's Rita Bahuguna Joshi. She later joined BJP in January 2022.
