Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia, who recently joined the Congress party, has received a threatening message on WhatsApp, warning him of dire consequences, according to police authorities on Sunday.
Punia has formally lodged a complaint at Bahalgarh police station in Sonipat. A police official confirmed that they have received the complaint and commenced an investigation.
Despite reports suggesting that the threat demanded Punia quit the Congress or face serious repercussions, Bahalgarh police station SHO Madan Singh indicated over the phone that the matter is currently under investigation. On Friday, Olympians Punia and Vinesh Phogat announced their entry into the political arena by affiliating with the Congress.
The Congress party has since nominated Phogat for the Julana seat in the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls and appointed Punia as the working chairman of All India Kisan Congress.
Punia, who clinched a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympic Games, faces a daunting challenge ahead with polling for 90 seats scheduled for October 5, with votes to be counted on October 8.
