Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah has criticized the state cabinet's recent decision to implement recommendations on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, asserting that only the Central Government holds the authority to act on these suggestions.
Speaking at a press conference, Borah refuted claims from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that the Congress had obstructed Scheduled Tribe status for six communities, stating that the newly-announced implementation was politically motivated and aimed at diverting attention from various issues, including alleged corruption.
Borah added that the state cabinet's decision to implement 57 clauses from the Biplab Sarma Committee's recommendations contradicted the spirit of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and questioned the timing of the sudden implementation after years of inaction.
