Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge visited Nanded on Thursday to meet the grieving family of the late Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan.

Vasantrao Chavan passed away on the morning of August 26 at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. Airlifted to Hyderabad from Nanded, the MP was diagnosed with severe health complications, including Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy—a brain dysfunction caused by reduced oxygen or blood flow.

According to KIMS Hospital, Chavan also suffered cardiac arrest due to respiratory failure and end-stage renal disease. Despite comprehensive care from a multidisciplinary team of doctors, his condition worsened, leading to a complete heart block and subsequent cardiac arrest.

In a press release, the hospital extended its deepest condolences to Chavan's family, friends, and constituents, stating, 'His passing leaves a void in our lives and the lives of those he served. May his soul rest in peace.'

The veteran leader had been elected from the Nanded constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Several Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole, also expressed their condolences.

In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said, 'The news of the demise of senior Congress leader, Nanded Lok Sabha MP Shri Vasantrao Chavan ji, is extremely sad. A grassroots leader, Shri Chavan supported and expanded the ideology of Congress throughout his life. His demise is an irreparable loss for the Congress family.'
