Uganda's Opposition Leader Bobi Wine Injured in Capital
Uganda's opposition leader Bobi Wine, a pop star turned politician, was shot in the leg by security agents. He finished runner-up in the 2021 election behind President Yoweri Museveni. His party condemned the violence, attributing it to the regime's crackdown on opposition. Museveni’s government denies these claims.
Uganda's main opposition leader Bobi Wine, a prominent critic of long-time President Yoweri Museveni, was shot in the leg by security forces in Kampala's northern suburb on Tuesday, according to his party's statements.
Wine, originally known as Robert Kyagulanyi and a notable pop star, was the runner-up in the 2021 presidential election. The National Unity Platform (NUP) revealed in a social media post that an attempt on his life had been made, leading to serious leg injuries.
Local broadcaster NTV reported that Wine was injured amid a confrontation where police used tear gas to disperse supporters. Video footage widely circulated online showed NUP officials assisting a wounded Wine from a medical center. The attack was condemned by the NUP, emphasizing the ongoing violence against opposition to the Museveni administration. Museveni's government has faced accusations of suppressing opposition voices, which it denies.
