Israel's General Strike Over Gaza Hostages Divides Nation
A rare general strike in Israel to protest the government's handling of hostages held in Gaza has resulted in nationwide disruptions, including at Ben-Gurion Airport. The strike highlights deep political divisions, with some supporting Prime Minister Netanyahu's hardline military approach and others demanding negotiations for the hostages' release. Jewish settlers were divided, some blaming Netanyahu’s government, others backing his strategy.
Israel witnessed significant nationwide disruptions on Monday as a rare general strike aimed at pressing for the return of hostages held in Gaza took effect, reflecting deep political divisions within the country.
Hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets late Sunday in protest, after six hostages were announced dead, blaming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing to secure their release. Netanyahu's supporters argue that continued military pressure on Hamas will eventually meet Israeli demands.
The labor court ruled to end the strike by 2:30 pm, stating it was politically motivated. Major sectors like banking and healthcare were impacted, and Ben-Gurion Airport halted outgoing flights temporarily. The nationwide demonstrations, said to be the largest since the start of the war, are pushing for a deal to bring back the remaining hostages.
