Trinamool Congress leader and former chief minister Mukul Sangma was appointed the Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, according to officials.
Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the lone Congress MLA, was also named as the opposition chief whip. This decision followed Sangma's request to Speaker Thomas A Sangma to appoint him, as the TMC-led alliance, backed by the lone Congress MLA, has six MLAs in a House of 60.
This appointment adheres to the rule that the opposition must have at least one-tenth of the total House strength to claim the post. The Assembly secretariat issued a notification stating the recognition of Sangma as the Leader of the Opposition effective from August 28, 2024.
