The Gauhati High Court on Monday issued notices to Assam Assembly Speaker, Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, and others regarding a pending petition filed by the opposition party. The petition seeks the disqualification of Ahmed, who was suspended from Congress for repeatedly violating party discipline.

Justice Devashis Baruah has asked the respondents to submit replies in the form of affidavits before the next hearing scheduled for September 25. The petition, submitted by Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, was initially filed on May 2 after Ahmed's suspension in October 2021.

The court remarked that the Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary can still dispose of the original application, even as the matter remains sub-judice. Senior advocate K N Choudhury, representing Hussain, stressed that the application remains undisposed despite the three-month mandated period.
