The Trinamool Congress (TMC), supported by the lone Congress MLA, has called for the leader of opposition (LoP) post in the Meghalaya assembly to be awarded to their party.

Speaker Thomas A Sangma acknowledged that former chief minister and TMC leader Mukul M Sangma officially put forth the request. 'The TMC, under the leadership of Mukul Sangma, has demanded the post of leader of opposition, citing the support of lone Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh. I have received their formal submission and am currently reviewing it,' the Speaker stated.

Despite the TMC having five MLAs compared to the Congress's single MLA, the opposition fulfills the 10% criterion required in the 60-member assembly for the LoP post. The Congress once had five MLAs, but their number reduced significantly after some joined the ruling party. The final decision on this matter is awaited.
