In the wake of Kerala Congress leader Simi Rose Bell John's expulsion from the party, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has expressed sharp criticism. On Monday, Poonawalla accused Congress of dismissing a leader who was advocating for women's rights instead of investigating her allegations.
In a self-recorded video posted on X, Poonawalla challenged Congress leader Priyanka Vadra, questioning whether she would defend Simi Rose Bell John or remain silent. "The Hema Committee report in Kerala has exposed numerous secrets," Poonawalla stated, noting that Left MLA Mukesh also faces severe accusations of sexual abuse and rape, allegations that the Communist Party of Kerala has not addressed. "The Congress has exhibited an anti-women attitude by expelling Simi Rose Bell John who had merely spoken out about the exploitative practices within the party," he added.
Poonawalla further criticized Congress for its slogan, 'Ladki hoon, Lad sakti hu,' pointing out the contradiction in expelling women who fight for their rights. He demanded a response from Priyanka Vadra on whether she would support John or remain silent. According to a statement from Kerala Congress, Simi Rose Bell John's accusations were intended to mentally harass and defame numerous women leaders within the party, allegedly in collusion with political rivals.
In response, John held a news conference in Kochi where she roasted the Congress, mentioning that other female leaders, including Lathika Subash and Padmaja Venugopal, had faced similar mistreatment. She asserted that her only 'mistake' was voicing the concerns of women in the party. "If I conspired with CPI(M), they should prove it," she challenged. John revealed that she now lives in fear for her safety and urged the party to present evidence against her allegations.
