Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Wednesday strongly criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his controversial remark stating he would not allow 'Miya' Muslims to 'take over' Assam, labeling the comment as 'pure communal venom' and insisting that silence cannot be the answer to such statements.
The contentious remarks were made by Sarma in the assembly when discussing the admissibility of adjournment motions brought by opposition parties to address the law and order issues in the state following the gangrape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
Reacting on X (formerly known as Twitter), Sibal condemned Sarma's comments, highlighting the evolving usage of 'Miya' as a term initially pejorative for Bengali-speaking Muslims but now being reclaimed by community activists as a form of defiance.
