External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cultural tradition of hugging, which has faced criticism from Western media.
In July, Modi's warm embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin drew considerable backlash, with Western headlines questioning his alignment. On Friday, Modi greeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a similar hug.
Jaishankar addressed the controversy, noting the cultural significance of the gesture in India. He asserted that these embraces are common in Indian diplomacy and should not be interpreted as political endorsements. He reiterated India's stance that Ukraine and Russia should engage in dialogue to resolve their conflict.
