Kamala Harris fondly remembered her trailblazing mother Shyamala Gopalan and the values she instilled in her, expressing how much she misses her, especially when on the brink of breaking the highest glass ceiling in the U.S.

Accepting her party's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Harris became the second woman to do so for her party, following in the footsteps of Hillary Clinton. Recalling her 'unexpected' rise after President Joe Biden left the race in July, Harris said she is 'no stranger to unlikely journeys.'

Harris shared memories of being raised by her mother, a 'brilliant 5-foot tall brown woman with an accent,' who traveled from India to California with the dream of curing breast cancer. She recalled her mother's lessons of justice, hard work, and determination, along with the support from their community after her parents' divorce.

In her speech, she also emphasized unity, arguing against the divisive rhetoric of her opponents, and underscored that Americans have more in common than what separates them. Harris concluded by recognizing her husband, Doug Emhoff, and celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary, before declaring her intention to break the highest glass ceiling left for women in America.
