Ukraine Joins the ICC: A Step Towards European Integration
Ukraine's parliament ratified the Rome Statute, enabling the country to join the International Criminal Court (ICC). This move is part of Ukraine's efforts to align with European Union standards and enhance the prosecution of Russian war crimes. Officials emphasized this as a significant step towards European integration.
Ukraine's parliament ratified the Rome Statute on Wednesday, officials announced, enabling the country to join the International Criminal Court (ICC). This decision is a pivotal moment in Kyiv's pursuit of European integration.
While Ukraine had previously recognized the ICC's jurisdiction, full membership marks a strategic step forward in its EU membership ambitions. According to lawmaker Oleksiy Honcharenko, this will enable the country to more effectively prosecute Russian war criminals amid ongoing conflict with Moscow.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, for alleged crimes against Ukrainian civilians. Despite Russian denials, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba commented on social media saying the ratification would enhance comprehensive accountability for Russian atrocities.
