A Thai senator has formally requested an ethics investigation into Prawit Wongsuwon, a seasoned politician and former army chief, who struck a television reporter on the head after she asked him a question.

Prawit Wongsuwon, 79, reportedly hit the reporter on Friday, an incident captured on widely circulated video footage. Known for his involvement in Thailand's political turmoil over the past two decades, Prawit leads the Palang Pracharat Party and served as deputy prime minister for nine years following the 2014 coup.

Senator Tewarait Maneechai condemned the incident as physical harassment, stating it disrespects the journalist's professional duties. Palang Pracharat Party spokesman Piya Tavichai defended Prawit, claiming he was teasing the reporter, with whom he shares a close friendship, and has since apologized. The event has ignited condemnation from Thailand's media community, with ThaiPBS urging Prawit to take responsibility.
