Union Minister L Murugan has strongly condemned the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, taking a swipe at the West Bengal government for its perceived inaction. Speaking to ANI, Murugan expressed his outrage, stating, "It's a strongly condemnable incident. The West Bengal chief minister should have taken severe action against the accused, but they failed. That's where the CBI entered, filed the case, and started the inquiry."

The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9, has triggered widespread outrage and protests across various cities, with citizens demanding justice for the victim. Prominent figures from the Bengal music industry, including actor Saheb Chatterjee and radio personality Mir Afsar Ali, joined the protests on Monday to voice their indignation and demand tough action against the perpetrators.

As the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) takes the reins of the inquiry, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud scheduled to hear it on August 20. The CBI has been granted permission to conduct a polygraph test on the arrested accused and has already carried out 3D laser mapping in the hospital's emergency ward.

In parallel, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. The SIT, led by IG Pranav Kumar, is mandated to submit its preliminary report within a month and has the authority to access documents from both government and private sectors to expedite the investigation.
