Slovak Opposition Challenges Ministers Amidst High Tensions
Slovak opposition parties have announced plans to force a parliamentary vote on dismissing the culture and justice ministers after dismissals at cultural institutions and the release of a prosecutor convicted of corruption. This follows protests and growing societal tensions, despite the ruling coalition's support for the ministers.
Slovak opposition parties announced on Friday their intention to push for a parliamentary vote on the dismissal of the country's culture and justice ministers. This decision comes following recent sackings at cultural institutions and the contentious release of a former prosecutor convicted of corruption.
The proposals, set for debate in a special parliamentary session, are a direct response to public protests that drew thousands earlier this week. These events underscore the high tensions in Slovak society after Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and wounded by a lone attacker in May.
Fico's coalition holds a majority in parliament and has supported the ministers, making their dismissal unlikely. Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova from the SNS party terminated the heads of national theatre and gallery, citing loss of confidence and management failures. However, opposition members and many artists claim these reasons are fabricated.
