Mediators Push for Cease-Fire Amid Escalating Israel-Hamas Conflict

International mediators are set to hold a new round of talks on Thursday aimed at halting the Israel-Hamas war and securing the release of scores of hostages. A potential deal is seen as the best hope of heading off an even larger regional conflict.

The United States, Qatar, and Egypt will meet with an Israeli delegation in Qatar as the Palestinian death toll from the 10-month-old war nears 40,000. Hamas has not yet confirmed its participation, accusing Israel of adding new demands to a proposal that had previously garnered U.S. and international support.

A cease-fire in Gaza could potentially calm regional tensions and may persuade Iran and Hezbollah to refrain from retaliatory actions following high-profile killings on both sides. However, both sides have expressed reservations and made new demands, casting doubt on the immediate success of the peace talks.
