Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others, including two former ministers and a police chief, are set to face trial on murder charges, according to court officials. The charges stem from the death of a grocery shop owner during violent clashes that culminated in the fall of Hasina's government.
Hasina, who fled to India, and her co-accused were involved in last month's unrest, which saw up to 500 fatalities. Court authorities have tasked Mohammadpur police with registering the case while clarifying investigative responsibilities remain under deliberation.
Following Hasina's resignation, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed control. Seven political parties, including the Awami League's main rival, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), have signaled support for establishing a fair election environment under the interim regime.
